MAORI LANDS

ECHO OF NATIVE WAR A COMPENSATION CLAIM WAIROA, H.B. May 2. The Kupatu Commission which, is enquiring into the grievances of certain Maori tribes opened its sitting at Wairoa to-day. The first three petitions dealt with the Kauhouroa Block, petitioners alleging that access to this land was wrong and that the Government was not justified in taking the land. The Maoris asked that the land be returned or compensation paid. Mr Robert Sim conducted the cases which occupied practically the whole afternoon. He contended that the deed of agreement was made with local natives only, who agreed to hand over the rebels’ lands without their being certified to as rebels, as required, and that many Hauhaus signed the deed as loyalists. The Commission adjourned until tomorrow morning.
