PATEA

[ From the " Chronicle’s ” Special Correspondent. ] Another largo hay stack was burned to the ground last week, Mr J. T. Bourkc, of Whenuakura, being the loser. The only memorial celebration held here on Anzne Day was a short service at St. George’s Church in the morning. A brief address was given by the Rev. A. Gibson. A memorial service was held at the Public School on Friday afternoon, when a very fine address was given by the Rev. A. Gibson, and the Last Post was sounded by Bugler Christiansen. The Boy Scout movement .appears to be making fair headway here, and so encouraging are the enrolments that it has been decided to make a formal application for the registration of the local troop. Very little interest was manifested in the local Borough election. Eight candidates stood for the six seats. The Patea Football Club held a dance in the Kakaramea Hall on Wednesday evening, the object being to try and increase the funds of the club, which just now are not in a very flourishing state. The Whenuakura residents held a shop day in Patea on Saturday last, in aid of the funds of their hall, and the result of the day’s efforts was an unqualified success. The annua] Chrysanthemum Show in aid of St. George’s Church will be held in the Town Hall on Friday afternoon and evening next. A splendid musical programme has been arranged for the evening.
