The Foxton Chamber of Commerce forwarded a copy of a resolution ob- j jecting to 4he name of Manawatu being substituted for that of Palmerston North.—lt was resolved that the 1 Council enter an emphatic protest against the proposed change. A letter from the secretary of the Taikorea School Committee asking that danger notice boards be erected near the Taikorea School was agreed to. Mr M. E. Wycherley wrote asking for the right to occupy a tramway reserve at Makowhai.—Left in the hands of Crs. McKelvie and Pearce and | the engineer. The District Engineer, Public Works Department, forwarded an estimate for the Foxton-Shannon Main Highway, i Manawatu bridge and approaches.—lt I was resolved that the Council agree to I the apportionment of cost, but that the j estimate of cost for the construction of the approaches was too high and that ’ further information should be obtained. ' It was resolved that the Public Works 1 Department be informed that in con- i sideration of receiving a grant for Fairfield road, the Council was prepared to set aside £3O a year for the maintenance of the road. “That a refund of £1 10s be allowed on license fees for local public halls’ ’ was another resolution agreed to. Contracts were accepted as follows: Contract No. 358, W. A. Hurst; 359, W. A. Hurst; 360, A. W. Hurst and Son; 361, K. Tomsett; 362, A. F. Claasen. The engineer’s report, dealing with road, bridge and culvert maintenance and general work done during the month, was approved. The traffic inspector reported that 762 motor drivers’ licenses had been issued during the month. The following amounts had been collected since last Council meeting:—Drivers’ licenses £l9O 10s, dog tax £39, building permits £8 10s. The tramway manager’s report stated that the chief items of traffic were: —Grain 28| tons, minerals and manure 259| tons, general merchandise 44| tons, stock 102 trucks, metal 174 trucks, wool 94 bales, eggs 60 crates, and 19 horses. Fares amounted to £2 7s 4d. The accounts showed a debit balance of £8 13s lid.
