THE ZANIBONI TRIAL

ACCUSED AND WITNESS Scene at Hearing of Attempted Murder Charge A DRAMATIC MOMENT [By Telegraph—Per Press Assn.—Copyright.] Received April 16, 5.5 p.m. (A and N.Z.) ROME, April 16. In the course of the Zaniboni trial Quaglia said that Zaniboni was in the room of the hotel and had already prepared a loophole in the shutter when Quaglia entered. Zaniboni showed him a rifle and wanted him to see if it was easy to aim at the balcony of the Chigi Palace. Witness said that he trembled with terror, but Zaniboni appeared cool and indifferent. Quaglia detailed the various revolutionary schemes in which Zaniboni was engaged, which fell through according to Zaniboni, because the funds promised by the Freemasons were not forthcoming to a sufficient extent. There was a scene when Zaniboni sprang up, clutched the bars of his cage and shouted, “On the head of my daughter, who is the mdst sacred thing to me in life, I swear that Quaglia pleaded at the last moment that he himself should be the one to shoot Signor Mussolini.”

Quaglia screamed: “I deny it,” and then left the witness stand, while the hearing was adjourned till Tuesday.
