PROGRESS OF RHODESIA

INCREASE IN POPULATION STEADY ADDITIONS Steady additions were made to the population of Southern Rhodesia during 1926, 'when 2950 immigrants entered the country, the details being:— British Home-born, 1338; South African British, 947; South African Dutch, 263; British from other Dominions, 71; European aliens, 214; Asiatics, 46; other coloured native, 71. Of this total only 190 came seeking employment. The feature of the year was the continued necessity of importing skilled mechanics and artisans, the demand for whom exceeded the available supply in Southern Rhodesia. It is also a significant commentary on the industrial position that the unemployed at Bulawayo at the. end of 1926 numbered only 55, which is the lowest figure since the Government Employment Bureau was established in 1921.
