GONVILLE’S NOISY PESTS
Sir, —Some little while apo, it was proposed by a sporting councillor, and I fancy carried unanimously, that an “open season” be declared upon the Gonville Road, for speeding motorists and cycle fiends. I have not, hitherto, taken advantage of the privilege, but, now that the fever is upon me, I would like to know if the license still holds good, and if it means the free use of the shotgun and, also, if one must fire only at the wheel. As several of us are contemplating a night’s sport while I the season is still on, I should be glad to know just the extent to which (sportsmen are allowed to go, also what is the most suitable sized shot to use. Some of these flying monsters are very tough skinned and the recent fines and threatened more drastic treatment have had as much effect upon them as would a thimble full of cold water upon the proverbial duck’s back. There is a very handy section being cleared down our way just now, and I would throw out the suggestion that the Mayor and Councillors go into camp for a week at Easter, or sooner if it could be arranged, when they will have full opportunity to observe the bedlamitic conditions which prevail, and then can go into committee to consider some definite plan to cope with this rapidly grown and growing nuisance which threatens the popularity of Gonville as a residential area, and is a positive cruelty to the patients of both the Public and Maternity Hospitals, not to mention the many other sick folk and nursing mothers there may be in the vicinity, apart from the very serious danger to life upon the road itself. Parry Thomas has been called a martyr to speed record. There are plenty martyrs to speed records in Gonville, and it is they in whom we are primarily interested, for we are not c«pccrned about th e fate of those who risk the breaking of their own necks, except in so far as we hope it will be decided for them in the Magistrate’s Court. But we art? very much con* corned for the safety of children and even ordinary common individuals whose only means of locomotion is “Shanks’ mare” or the common pushbicycle. Trusting that my suggestion will receive consideration anti that you will be able to favour us with the information regarding the taws and regulations for taming this choice game. SHOTGUN. Gonville. March 9.
