PROHIBITION SCANDAL QUESTIONABLE METHODS PROFITS IN POISONED LIQUOR MANY DEATHS CAUSED. [By Telegraph—Per Preas Assn.—Copyright.) Received March 9, 11.45 p.m. NEW YORK, March 9. Further disclosures of “under cover” men have led to the dismissal of scores of indictments against violators of the prohibition law, on the ground that juries here are reluctant to convict offenders against whom evidence is thus collected. Sensational charges made by Congressman Laguardia disclosed that a perfumery house operated by the Government made legal withdrawals of large quanties of denatured alcohol and resold the poisoned beverage to bootleggers, who rc-distilled it and sold it to the ultimate consumer. The perfumery house made a profit of 100,000 dollars in six weeks and turned the money over to Government agents. The arrested bootleggers were concerned with these charges. The beverages, despite re-distillation, probably caused many deaths.
