STORMY CHRISTMAS
SAILING SHIP’S ORDEAL WOMAN AND GIRL HELP The Norwegian sailing ship Skarogrom (1976 tons), with her timber cargo and hull intact, berthed at the Surrey Commercial Docks yesterday after drifting 500 miles, while the crewfought day and night to chop free the wrecked top hamper, which was destroped in a hurricane. Captain Job Annuescn, by bold seamanship, saved his vessel, from which the mainmast, foreyards, and rigging had been swept. After his wife and daughter had assisted to rig a jury mast, Captain Amnesen refused offers of assistance from passing vessels. The Skaregrom was refitted at the Azores, and resumed her voyage. Miss Anna Annesen, aged 12, daughter of the captain, tells how her father promised her a trip to Australia. 1 ‘He told me the storm would soon be over,” she said; “but I saw hrm and mummy looking very worried. When the storm ended on Christmas Eve I went on deck to see the Christmas tree father had rigged up there. It had been washed overboard, but the carpenter made another, and wo enjoyed Christmas after all.”
