MUNI CP AL THEATRE Undoubtedly Harold Lloyd’s new comedy feature, “ College Days,” has proved successful with Wanganui theatre patrons. The production will be shown at the Opera House to-night, to-morrow night, and finally at a matinee on Saturday afternoon. In the supporting cast Harold Lloyd has several popular players. Jobyna Ralston is leading lady, and others in the cast are Brocks Benedict, James Anderson, Hazel Keener, Joseph Harrington ana P. J. Harmon. The comedy is directed by Sam Taylor and Fred Newraeyer. The theme of the story tells of a new boy at a well-known college who is anxious to become popular. He prepares by imitating heroes of fiction and the movies in manner and clothes and in consequence, does not achieve his object. Mainly through the assistance of a girl friend, the. now student ultimately makes good, and in the most 'important football match of the year, becomes hero. Reserves are procurable at H. I. Jones and Son’s. With <( College Days” a special Richard Talmadgo comedy-drama, “The Fighting Demon.” will be shown. Lured into South America on the promise of a position as a safe and vault expert, Richard Talmadge runs the gamut of comedy and thrills as only this stunt star can do. He finds the position is the somewhat unethical business of opening other people’s safes and vaults, and after his discovery embarks upon a thrilling campaign of disturbing gangsters. A cast of popular players supports Richard Talmadge. RATIONALIST ASSOCIATION There will be a meeting of the Wanganui Rationalist Association on Sunday evening, March 13, in the Luxor Cabaret. Members and the general public will have the opportunity of listening to an address by Mr I. S. Langley, editor of “The Rationalist,” who is a well-known lecturer in Melbourne. MERMAID’S MARDI GRAS Icreasing interest is being manifested in the movement being promoted to establish a fund for the improvement of the Wanganui beach. The scheme outlined, which provides for a refund of one third of all voting monies to bodies nominating a Mermaid in the campaign has been well received. (Several organisations are now making arrangements to participate and selections of mermaid candidates are being made. It is requested that all clubs, etc., desirous of taking part in the movement shall submit their nominations not later than next Monday. All mermaids must have passed their eighteenth birthday to qualify for nomination. One of the features of the project which should be borne in mind, is the fact that the beach improvement scheme will provide work during the winter months. (Country bodies may enter into the Mermaid Contest and receive a similar refund to that offered to town combinations.

MATARAWA SCHOOL PICNIC

AN ENJOYABLE OUTING. Favoured by fine weather, the parents and children connected with the Matarawa School enjoyed to the fullest the picnic arranged by the school committee, held at Kai Iwi on Friday. The enthusiasm with which the parents and committee worked to organise the day’s outing resulted in a thoroughly enjoyable day for all concerned. Mitchell are again making their beautiful garden the location of an effort on behalf of the local Presbyterian charge. The outstanding attraction of the afternoon will be the presence of the Garrison Band, whose music will in itself ensure the enjoyment of visitors to the fete. Several interesting competitions have been arranged, while the stalls for garden produce, meat, cakes, etc., are in competent hands. For the benefit of visitors buses will ply between Wanganui, Ford ell and Ngaturi, and the occasion will provide an opportunity for a very enjoyable outing. GARRISON BAND CONCERTS. On Saturday afternoon the Garrison Band has kindly consented to give one of their popular programmes at a garden party to be held in Mr T. Mitchell’s grounds. Ngaturi. Fordell. This function will be held to raise funds for the church and promises to be a most successful affair. On Sunday afternoon the band will give a municipal concert at Virginia Lake, commencing at three o -'clock.
