SWIMMING

GONVILLE CLUB COMBINED CARNIVAL TO-NIGHT A big inter-club carnival promoted by the Gonville Swimming Club, will be held in the Gonville baths this evening. All the leading Wanganui swimmers will compete and the carnival should be among the best yet held in the city. The following events are on the programme: 50 yards boys under 15, 25 yards girls under 15, 440 yards men’s handicap, open novelty animal race, 50 yards ladies’ handicap, men’s dive, 75 yards men’s handicap, ladies’ dive, 100 yards men’s breastroke, boys’ tub race, 75 yards ladies’ medley, open plunge, 75 yards breaststroke handicap (ladies), and a polo match between teams from the Gonville men’s and ladies’ clubs. Norman Dowsett, record holder for New Zealand for 100 yards, will compete in the 75 yards men’s handicap from scratch, and he will concede starts up to 17 seconds. In his heat Dowsett will meet V. Reid, who recently beat him over 50 yards.
