THE MARKETS

A GENERAL REVIEW TRADE CONDITIONS ABROAD A review of recent lines in the overseas markets is given below. For trade in Wanganui during the past week, moderate business has been gone through and conditions are not very brisk. Eastern Goods. Movements arc rather conflicting in Chinese goods, an occasioned firming taking place through the hindering to shipment owing to the unsettled state jof the country. Against this, however, several slight declines have been noted, so no general movement has occurred which would justify speculative buying. Cocoa Beans. This market is firm and there is a possibility of a further rise owing to a shortage in crops and to speculation. Because of these circumstances, very little attention has been paid to quality. The best lots have been taken for early shipment, hut, for after March delivery, the quality of the product will probably he slightly inferior. Brazil Nuts. Considerable change has taken placo in new crop prices, hut rates arc much lower than those ruling last season. Recent cables report an advance in the market. Peanuts. Slight reductions were shown in the recent offerings of Chinese No. 1 handpicked peanuts in shell. In view of the disturbances in China and probable difficulty in obtaining adequate supplies in the near future, the quotations are considered to be good. Pineapples. Firmness ha£ been shown for the past few weeks in prices for most grades, with only fractional alterations in first quality cubes and slices. Jams. Reports from one of the largest English manufacturers state that the reason for the recent cabled increase in prices of jams and marmalade, was the higher cost of manufacture, fruit, sugar, coal and tinplate. Tartaric Acid. In the English market for tartaric acid more firmness has been advised. Italian tartaric has also increased in price. Tapioca. Australian agents reports that the market is steady and they anticipate an improvement shortly in the demand from India. If this eventuates higher prices will probably rule.
