BURIED TREASURE
HIDDEN BY MONKS EXCITEMENT IN FRENCH TOWN. The London “Daily Chronicle’s’’ special correspondent at Paris says tha-t excitement reigns in the town of Douai owing to a belief: that the treasure hidden there by English Benedictine monks during the Revolution is about to be unearthed. Three large boxes, containing ornaments, in precious metals land other valuables, were hidden under the Benedictine College. Two were discovered in 1862 during the excavation, but the third is still missing. Recently the “Friends of Douai,” a group of people interested in the history of the town, called in two diviners to help in finding the' treasure. One man found his diving rod influenced by radiations of gold and silver at a certain spot. His companion, tho Abbe Bouly, vichr of Hardelot, with a simple apparatus made of the whalebone ribs of an umbrella, also carried out investigations. His apparatus was visibly lagitated at, one place, but this was found to be duo to the gold reserve in the local branch of the Bank of France. Continuing his investigations, he con-] firme'd the discovery of the local man, estimating that the treasure wh.s buried at 3yds to Syds deep. Digging has begun at the spot, and | crowds are watching for the result.
