BULLS

GENERAL AND PERSONAL [ From the “ Chronicle's ” Special Correspondent. ] To-day is sale day, and fair entries of pigs, sheep and catle have been received. Mr T. Pargeter, Inspector of Health, paid two visits to Bulls last week on official business. Mr J. E. Walker, acting-chairman in the absence of Air H. McManaway, will preside at this evening’s meeting of the Town Board. The pupils of the Putorino School held their annual picnic at Moana Roa on Friday in perfect weather. This was the third school picnic to be held at the new seaside resort within a fortnight. So-called experts have had a lot to say about the dangers of Moana Roa as a bathing place, but this part of tiw West Coast appears to be as safe as any other. On the occasion of picnic gatherings an up-to-date life-saving equipment has been placed in charge of capable swimmers, and. safe bathing spots flagged off. Everything possible has been done to ensure the safety of children and others, and the formation of a surf club is being taken up enthusiastically.

The Parowanui annual school picnic will be held at Moana Roa on Friday next. As in past years, the committee extend a cordial invitation to all children in the district, and their relatives and friends, and, the tides being favourable for bathing ,it is expected that there will be a large attendance. Last week’s evening sports meeting drew a good crowd of spectators, and interest was taken in exhibition of pn>-ting-the-shot by E. King, a new arrival here. On Thursday next he will give further exhibitions, this time with the hammer, of which he is also an expert thrower.

The principal events at last week’s sports resulted as follows:—22o yards flat handicap.—E. Ingram 1, R. Mansell 2, E. Robbie 3. One-mile flat handicap.—W. Ellery 1, E. Ingram 22, R. Ingram 3. Boy.s’ cycle handicap.—R. Ellery 1, R. Bromley 2, H. Kearney 3. The Rev. Mr Ireland is reported to be making good progress after his recent operation ,and he will probably by strong enough to leave hospital about the end of the week.

There has been a mild epidemic colic here lately, not unusual at this time of the year, but probably made more severe than usual through persons imbibing tank water of doubtfull freshness after a practically rainless spell of several weeks. Representatives of the Bulls Bowling Club will meet Marton at Marton on Wednesday afternoon in the second round of the Rangitikei Shield competition. The contest has reached an interesting stage, Hunterville, Marton and Bulls being level at present.
