BY NEW PACIFIC CABLE i ALL EXPECTATIONS EXCEEDED (Special to “Chronicle”) I AUCKLAND. Jan. 20. ; Advice has been received by the Auckland office of the Pacific Cable ■ Board that the cable steamer Faraday i has removed the slight defect which I revealed itself in the new cable be- ' tween Suva and Fanning Island and • the steamer left Fanning Island this j morning for Sydney. En route she win call at Suva to deposit in the Board s tanks the cable not at present required. Tests on new cable, which runs from Suva to Bam fl eld (British Columbia) via Fanning Island, have given results beyond all expectations. The guaranteed speed of tho cable has been 1 exceeded by .100 per cent, and the ! signals recorded on tapes at the rate i of 240 words a minute, are more distinct than those given by the old cable when it wa s working at only i 30 words a minute. ; In accordance with the term of con i tract for making and laying the cable, i the new cable will not be taken over iby the Pacific. Cable Board until it I has given satisfactory service for 30 1 davs. During that time the contractors : will have the cable at their disposal for some hours during tho day for testing purposes.
