CROQUET

DOMINION TOURNEY A FIRST-DAY SURPRISE [ Per Press Association. ] PALMERSTON N., Jan. 21, The Dominion croquet championships commenced to-day in glorious weather, the entries being a record. The surprise of the day was the defeat of Mrs Johnson (Christchurch) and R. Caughley (Wellington) by Mrs Gambrill (Manawatu) and Colonel Hume (Nelson) 26-0. The latter pair are comparatively new players as far as tournaments are concerned, while Caughley ha s hold the open singles championship and his partner was three times ladies ’ champion.

THE FOXTON MEETING OPENING DAY’S RESULTS CUP WON BY OPA FIRST ACRE TAKES THE SPRINT (“Chronicle’’ Special Reporter). The Foxton Racing Club’s annual meeting opened yesterday in gloriously fine weather and there was a good attendance. The totalisator handled £14,410 for the day, as compared with £17,152 for the “off” day last year. Everything went off smoothly, thanks to the excellent organisation of the secretary, Mr D. G. Ogilvy, assisted by Mr A. Way and an able staff. Punters’ Bad Start. The first race, the back hurdles, proved an easy thing for the rank outsider, Ardath, who took the lead after half a mile had been covered and was never headed, winning comfortably by about a dozen lengths. A good tussle for second place saw the favourite a length in front of Gurnion, with Banjuke fourth. The winner paid a big dividend. Wilderness brought off a surprise in the Himatangi Hack, getting a lucky run on the rails at the distance, and he won easily by over a length, with Lady Cynthia half a length ahead of Sandburr. Moepai was fourth. Opa’s Second Cup. Tiega and Panart were first out in the Cup race, followed by Bent and Peneus. The last-named ran into the lead and passed the stands well ahead of Panart, Bent, Nukumai, Tiega and Opa. As they ran down the back stretch Opa moved into second berth and took the lead at the entrance to the straight, holding his own in the run home to pass the post two and a-half length clear of Nukumai. Ngata was half a length away, followed closely by Panart and Bent. Abbey Qneen and Vast Acre were the early leaders in the Novice Stakes but in the run to the judge Bissac asserted herself and won by half a length, with Petal a length away and Vast Acre fourth. Bank Draft was a quiet tip for the Awahou Hack and he assumed the lead at the straight entrance to win ieely by a length and a-half. Vivo beat Empire Camp by a head for second money and Hymestrason and Twink were next. First Acre’s Narrow Win Mireusonta and First Acre were favourites in the Anniversary Handicap and both were in the money. Bonideer was first out, but Mireusonta and Firs*: Acre were always prominent. Tn the run home First Acre managed to snatch a head victory from Bonogne, with Mireusonta half a length away. A runaway victory was scored by Whenuanui in the Marotiri Hack. The Wanganui trained gelding was first out and was not headed, his winning margin being five lengths. Lin Arlington was a length and a-half behind Grand National, with Bonny Louisa fourth and Molto fifth.

Bonhomme proved the best of good things for the Herrington Handicap, winning after a short tussle with Royal Diadem from the distance by threequarters of a length. Nukumai was a length away and Royal Diadem next.
