GENERAL ITEMS It is understood that the telephone lines passing through the town are to be placed underground. The work will probably be carried out next month and will be completed before the tar-sealing work is put in hand. The town was unusulally quiet on New Year’s Eve after the picturecrowd had dispersed, and 1927 was ushered in without much ado. Earlier in the evening, however, a typical holiday spirit predominated and business people h(ad a busy time. New Year's Day was particularly quiet the town being well represented at the Marton races and the Taihape sports. The drain-laying work on the Domtain has been completed and the turf has been rolled in. The work of fencing the playing area is to be put in hand immediately and will be completed before the Caledonian Games. The Sil verhope and Putorino districts are now being served by daily mtails. The service docs not run from Huntcrville as was expected, but, from Marton, the Tutacnui contractor carrying the work. On Saturday morning two motor ears collided on the bridge just north of Huuterville and both were fairly badly <lama.ged. The north-bound car was able to proceed on its journey but the other vehicle was held up pending repairs. None of the occupants was seriously injured. BATHING FATALITY NARROWLY AA7ERTED What might have been a flatal bathing accident occurred at the Bangitikei River near Ohingaiti on Sunday, when three young ladies—members of a picnic party from Hunterv'ille —were caught in one of the muny treacherous whirlpools in the stream. They were brought to safety only after a difficult and prolonged struggle. AVhen freed from danger alt three were in an unconscious condition but the prompt application of artificial respiration averted more serious consequences. The ladies wore Misses Thelma Young, Dulcie \oung and Eliza Jonson, and were the only members of the party who were in the water at the time. Their plight was first noticed by Mr A. Bilderbeck, who, fully-dressed dived in to the rescue, being followed closely by Messrs B. A. Lyall and C. Berry. A trying period followed but good work on the part of the rescuers brought the victims to sufety. Mr Bilderbeck, however, was overcome in the water and had to be assisted to the bank. In a short time the unfortunate party recovered sufficiently' to be able to proceed to the residence of Air George Jonson, but Miss Thelma Young and Mr Bilderbe<*k collapsed ami medical aid had to be summoned. Both were in a serious condition on Monday, but yesterday they were able to be taken to their homes in Huntcrville, and they are now progressing satisfactorily. TO-NIGHT’S PICTURES “AVhen the Door Opened,” to be screened here to-night, is a comedydrama of the great outback. The story is taken from James Oliver Curwood’s most thrilling romance and the cast of characters includes many Fox stars. The comedy and other supporting attractions are of exceptional merit.
