CO-OPERATION

AN ENGLISH INQUIRY. INVESTIGATORS ON TOUR. To commence a tour of Australia and New Zealand, Sir Thomas Allen, Mr W. T. Charter, and Mr J. English, directors of the Co-operative Wholesale Society of England, arrived at Fremantle by tho liner Cormorin recently. ■ The visitors are to make their lour J with the object of ascertaining how 1 far the co-operative idea of production I and distribution could be utilised, so that, while the producer received a fair remuneration for his products, the cost ' to the consumer should bo as low as i possible. It was desirable that the Bri- i tish consumer should be brought nearer; to the Australian producer. The annual tra-de of the society amounted to £80,000,000. The society, which manufactured as well as distributed goods, owned the largest flour mill in tho United Kingdom, the weekly turnover of wheat being 10.000 tons. It was felt that the society, with which wore affiliated 1200 other societies, was in a ; position to advertise the products of, the Empire. Between 30,000 and 40,000 acres of plantations in India and Ceylon wore owned by the society, which conducted depots in many countries, and in all the principal European cities.

They are to leave Sydney for New Zealand early this month, and are to return to England via Canada.
