Christmas, 1926, will be remembered as the coalloss Christmas. The posi-tion-was so desperate in South London that the authorities wore compelled to make deliveries on Christmas morning, which broke fine but became dull later, rain falling in the afternoon and evening. There was everywhere a joyous spirit, though trams and buses ceased running early and the streets were deserted, save for a rare point policeman. The celebrations were all indoors, including Their Majesties' function at Sandringham. The Right Hon. J. G. Coates, who is staying with a relative at Aymestry Court, near Worcester, revelled in the real old fashioned Christmas, inclu<L ing a fall of snow.
