The Sheffield Shield cricket match between Victoria and New South Wales was continued to-day. New South Wales on Saturday had made 221. A'ictoria have now lost one wicket for 573, Woodfull having made 133, Ponsford not out 334 and Hendry not out 85. The weather was fine and the wicket excellent. Tlic opening pair, Woodfull and Ponsford, gave 20,000 spectators a thrilling day’s cricket and tho visiting bowlers and fieldsmen a gruelling time. They started pasting the howling with the first ball and kept right on. Ponsford’s first fifty came up in 28 minutes and his first hundred in 75 minutes. Frequent bowling changes were tried, but failed to retard the rate of scoring. The second century appeared on the board in 132 minutes, the last fifty taking 17 minutes, and the third century in .180 minutes. With 75 more added. Woodfull was snapped up by Ratcliffe off Andrews. Ponsford was then 232. Throughout Woodfull gave a wonderful display of punishing batting. Hendry joined Ponsford, and, inspired his partner, kept the tired bowlers and fieldsmen busy. The Sheffield Shield cricket match between South Australia and Queensland was begun on Saturday and continued to-day. South Australia batted first and made 432 for six wickets before stumps wore drawn on Saturday. Continuing to-day. they completed the innings for 579, to-day’s double figure scores being Alexander 88, Williams 56 and Pritchard 16. Rowe took three wickets for 82 and Bcnstead two for 121. Queensland made 203 for six wickets (Gill 20, Oxenham 47, Thompson 91).
The weather to-day was fine, but rain had deadened tho outfield, though the wicket was not affected. The South Australians went in for forcing against weak and frequently changed bowling. Alexander played a sound and excellent game, while Williams rattled up runs. In the Queensland innings Oxenham and Thompson made a fine stand with lively cricket for the third wicket, otherwise the visitors found it. difficult to negotiate the bowling of Wil liams and Halcombe. The latter, a fast bowler, is still in his teens, and is playing his first int.er-Statc match.
