WAR ON MOSQUITOES
CAMPAIGN IN ITALY. CINEMA’S IMPORTANT PART Wherever war has been waged scientifically against the mosquito malar: i I has very largely, if, indeed, not entirely, disappeared. Italy, ravaged by the disease from very early times, has fared the problem boldly and has n< only taken active steps to stamp out tie mosquito pest, but has also conduct c l a campaign of intensive propaganda. In this the cinema has played an important part, and a film taken at tlu instance of the Italian Government was, by request of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, shown recently in London. The old idea that malaria was dur bad air arising from bad water had the lecturer explained, forced people i< run away from malarial zones, and tin consequent neglect made local condi tioas infinitely worse. In the film de populated areas were shown, areas froir which the people had fled before tin I scourge. And then* were also deplete- ’ highly cultivated regions where wai against the mosquito had been success- . ful and where the soil was once more tilled by u healthy und prosperous peasantry. In a very clear manner the ’ film demonstrated the development of > the mosquito and also of the malaria I I gonn, and the various steps, such us draining marsh lands and spraying, taken to exterminate the mosquito. I Barraclough ; s Magic Nervine stops * oothache for good. 1/6.
