FOOTBALL. JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVES. WANGANUI v. RANGITIKEI. CLOSE MATCH AT MARTON. VISITORS 1 ONE-POINT WIN. (From th© “Chronicle's” Special Correspondent) The Wanganui junior representatives were hard put to it to defeat Rangitikei by 6 points to 5 at Marton Park yesterday. Wanganui had the better of the play, but failed to cross Rangitikei ’s line, their six points being made up of two penalty goals. Rangitikei forwards played well, but their backs failed to reproduce the previous Wednesday’s form. The following teams took the field: — Wanganui (blue and black) —Coxon, Heibner, Hcinold, Broad, R. Coxon, Bourke, Smith, Cutelli, Caird, Barclay, Edwards, Arland, Webb, Grenside, Calcott. Rangitikei (green)—Aston, Harre, Kelleher, Downs, Lilburn, Cameron, Rawson, Williams, Hoffman, Mcßeth, McMurchie, Ruahina, Stern, Luckie and Halliburton.

Wanganui kicked off, and Rangitikei forwards rushed play downfield, but Wanganui retaliated, the ball going to Broad, ■who kicked over the green line, Aston forcing. At this stage Downs left the field with an injury to a leg, Dickson replacing him. A free to Rangitikei enabled Williams to find touch well up the ground. Rawson set his backs in motion, ‘but the passes were taken at a standstill and very little ground was gained. Wanganui pressed, compelling Rangitikei to force. Then the Wanganui backs became associated in nice passing rushes, but Harre intercepted when they were looking dangerous. Kelleher and Dickson rushed play to Wanganui’s quarters, where Heinold was penalised for hanging on, but Williams’ shot passed under the bar. Wanganui backs were combining better than Rangitikei, but lack of finish spoilt their movements. Rangitikei forwards rushed play to Wanganui’s end, where Stern dashed across under the posts. Williams’kick hit the bar and bounced over. Rangitikei 5; Wanganui 0. Wanganui attacked and a forward battled across, but the referee ruled a five yards’ scrum, from which Rangitikei cleared. The blues came back, however, Heinold dummying nicely, but he held on too long. Dickson shortly afterwards took a smart mark and Hound the line well up. The blue vanguard took play back but this time Aston stemmed the attack with a timely mark. A great dash by the same player took play well downfield, but Coxon saved with a good liner. Rawson whipped the ball out to his backs smartly, but Dickson on the wing missed the pass and Heibner saved with a speculator. Wanganui were then nearly over on several occasions, but they had no luck. Off-side play by a green back saw Edwards have a fruitless shot at goal. Aston was tempor arily hurt and on resumption of play Rangitikei forced. Just before halftime a Rangitikei player was penalised for off-side play and Edwards land cd a great goal from well out.

Rangitikei 5; Wanganui 3. Wanganui set up a hot attack on re sumption. Four blue forwards broke

away, with only Aston, the Rangitikei full-back, to beat, but a golden oppor tunity was bungled. Rough play by Williams, who was cautioned by the referee, gave Edwards a chance to put Wanganui in tho load, but his kick was a grubber. A pot by Heinold went very close. Some scrambling play in midfield followed and Rangitikei attacked, compelling the blues to force. Wanganui forwards set up a hot attack, but Dickson kicked to Coxon, who potted unsuccessfully. A nice passing rush by the Wanganui backs was spoilt by Broad, who sent out an impossible pass. R. Coxon took play to the greens’ twenty-five with a good run and dribble. Aston failed to play the ball with his foot and was penalised, Edwards placing Wanganui in the lead with a ucat goal. Wanganui 6; Rangitikei 5. Wanganui attacked again, but a free brought relief to the greens. Rangitikei gradually worked their way to the visitors’ line, the forwards playing with great dash, but Wanganui quite held their own during the closing stages. Mr. E. C.
