OHAKUNE
GENERAL. The Borough Council will hold Its ordinary meeting on Thursday evening. A special meeting will be held subsequently. All interested are reminded that the Plunket Society’s annual meeting will take place in St. John’s Hall at 2.30 on Thursday. The artful half-back C. Jones had the misfortune to injure his shoulder whilst playing for the Junction team in the match with United on Saturday. FOOTBALL. COMPETITION GAMES. The competition games were contln" ued on Saturday. Following arc the results:— Seniors. United 13 v. Junction 3. Raetihi 6 v. Ohakune 3. Juniors. Ohakune 9, v. Horopito 0. Rangataua 3 v. Junction 3. United 16 v. Kariol 9. Thirds. Rangataua 6 v. Ohakune 0. Raetihi 14 v. United 20. Karioi thirds were unable to play owing to a breakdown on the road, and this match will be played at a later date. United (blue) v. Junction (green). Fielding a team of players which included two yiniors and three third grade players, Junction went down to United at Hochfort Park to the tune of 13 points to 3. It was not a great exposition of Rugby, but there were just enough bright flashes to keep the handful of spectators interested throughout. Junction attacked strongly right through the game, and, considering they were unable to Held a team of senior players, they put up a remarkably good fight against what is considered one of the most formidable combinations in the competition. The three third grade players, Smales in particular, played exceptionally good football, and did everything neatly that was required of them. In the first twenty, Williamson broke away, following a serum, with the ball at his toe, and Parrant, coming through with some pace, secured the ball and finished by scoring behind the posts, enabling him to place an easy goal. Play in the second quarter was very even throughout. A melee was in progress near the centre of the field, when Elliott (Junction) intercepted a pass and bolted with tho ball for the goal line with fast United players in close pursuit. He was, however, supported by Mead, who took a timely pass right on the line and scored. Pratt’s kick was fruitless. Play was dead for a time at the beginning of tho second half, but United soon made the pace and had Junction hemmed in their own twenty-five. A free-kick relieved, and the Junction forwards took a hand and the blues were compelled to force. The United backs were handling splendidly and Parrant, taking advantage of an opening, notched another try for United. He failed with the kick. The remainder of the quarter was fairlv even, and the change over came with no alteration in the score. Both teams made it fairly lively for the final quarter, and play went smartly up and down file field. The United backs’ assaults were nulifled by the smothering tactics of the fast Junction forwards. Following a scuffle in Junction twentyfive Marsh broke away and landed another try for United, I’arrant converted. Mr Hartley was referee.
