EXPORT TO BRITAIN l MINE OWNERS’ FEAR TROUBLE WITH THE MINERS ■ ■ . FIRMS WANT ENGLAND'S MARKETS. By Telegraph—Per Press Assn. —Copyright. LONDON, June 6. The “Daily Herald” says that German firms decline to sell coal to Britain, possibly because they are afraid of having trouble with their own miners. or prefer to sell in the market usually held by Britain. A BALLOT SUGGESTED MINERS AND THEIR WIVES STATEMENT BY MR. COOK Received June 7, 10.35 p.m. LONDON, June 6. Mr A. J. Cook, in the course of a speech, said he was prepared to have a ballot of miners and their wives to see whether Messrs Cook and Smith or Messrs Hodges and Varley should represent them, provided the Government accepted the result and work started on Monday week. “If it goes against me I will resign,” he said. “Anybody who lengthens the struggle is a murderer. If there is a spark of humanity in the nation the miners will win, because only starvation will drive them back. If crying children force the men to accept defeat, it will be the dearest victory England has ever won.” A decision on the owners’ offer of an informal meeting will be made on Monday.
