ON TOUR

THE PRIME MINISTER VISITS HIS ELECTORATE DEPUTATIONS PRESENT LOCAL CLAIMS. [Per Press Association.! DARGAVILLE, June 2. The Prime Minister, the Right Hon. J. G. Coates, accompanied by Mr F. D. Thomson (private secretary) and staff, arrived at Dargaville, the headquarters of his electorate, this afternoon. Ho spent the morning in the southern part of tho electorate and at Ruawai, where he received a deputation from the Railway League, who presented a petition for a railway linking up with the North yAuckland Main Trunk at Paparoa.

The Prime Minister was not sympathetic. He told the deputation that the route as recommended by the Commission would be carried out and he saw no reason why the plans should he altered. The district would do better with an improved road to Paparoa, the nearest point on the railway. A second deputation was from the Raupo Drainage Board, which is carrying out extensive drainage in the district and asked for Government assistance to complete the work. Mr Coates said an officer of the Department would come up and report. To-night the Prime Minister is in Dargaville, where he received a deputation asking that an early start be made with the connecting link of the Ki-rikopuni-Dargaville railway, which has already been authorised. The deputation also suggested that the work was well suited for a number of unemployed. Tho Prime Minister in reply said the next Public Works Statement, which would be out in a matter of only a few weeks, would give all the information required concerning tho railway. The rest of the evening was taken up with private deputations, of which there was quite a number. Tho Prime Minister also gave attention to a number of matters appertaining to the district in which ho is interested as member for the district.

The party leaves in the morning on route for Auckland and Wellington. Mr Coates will spend a day at his old home !at Rototuna, Matakohe, probably among the pheasants, and will reach Auckland on Saturday morning.
