DIRTY DAIRYMAN

DISGRACEFUL STATE OF AFFAIRS TAYFOBTH MILKMAN FINED £lO. FILTHY CONDITIONS REVEALED. **l think it is a disgraceful state of affairs. ’ ’ This remark was made by Mr J. 8. Barton, S.M., at the Wanganui Magistrate 's Court, when Edward Goodban, a dairyman of Tayforth, was charged with taking milk, intended for human consumption, from certain cows, and failing to thoroughly cleanse the udder and teats before taking the milk, contrary to the Dairy Industries Act. Inspector D. Munro, who prosecuted, pointed out that when he visited the defendant’s dairy on March 15, he was engaged milking a cow. The animal’s udder and the defendant’s hands were In a dirty condition. He waited for the defendant to finish off the animal and commence another without cleansing his hands. 11 Between his hands and fingers was a mixture of dried milk and other filth,” added the Inspector. An Exceptional Case. The defendant was a licensed dairyman and he purchased his business five or six months ago. The Magistrate:—Does this man supply direct to consumers? The Inspector:—He supplies it to a vendor, who sells it to private consumers. The Magistrate:—lt is what we might get at the door? Inspector Munro answered in the affirmative, and further explained that he had power to deal with cases of this description himself. While any action he took might affect the individual it did not provide publicity by the case, and thus prove a deterrent to others. If the defendant was fined his license would be automatically cancelled, but ho could apply the next day for another license. Providing he washed his hands he (the inspector) had no alternative but to grant him another license. The case was an exceptional one. Nature’s Brewery. The Magistrate said that they had seen what effect beer and whisky had upon men that morning, but with the milk they did not know what the effect might be. “It is enough to make a man resolve that he won’t drink anything,” added His Worship. Senior-Sergeant Lopdell:—Nature’s brewery is always safe. The defendant was convicted and ' fined £lO, and costs 7s, his license automatically being cancelled.
