MAKING SURE

DESIRE TO DIE BLACKSMITH WHO WOULD NOT LIVE. JUMPED 50 FEET, THEN CUT HIS THROAT. [Per Press Association] DUNEDIN, Feb. 19. Frederick William Hughes, aged 55, blacksmith, a married man, with his wife living in Dunedin, committed suicide at Alexandra this morning. He was employed on the public works at Chatto Creek. He went to Alexandra yesterday for medical advice, and set out for Dunedin by the express. Crossing a bridge he jumped off the train. He was unhurt, but while proceeding back to Alexandra by motor he jumped, falling 50 feet. Although terribly injured he was so determined to end his life that he cut his throat with a pocket knife before help arrived, dying in a few minutes.
