TROTTING
WANGANUI MEETING OPENING DAY’S RESULTS. CUP WON BY KOKIRITEA. MORNING RAIN AFFECTS ATTENDANCE. It was most unfortunate that a steady drizzle set in early yesterday morning and continued up till midday. ' As a consequence the attendance at the opening of the Wanganui Trotting Club’s annual meeting was very sparse, and the club would scarcely show a profit on the day. After the first race the clouds cleared away and the afternoon was beautifully fine, while the track was unaffected by the rain. Some fine sport was witnessed, and there was plenty of- incident to keep the public interested. The Cup was won by Kokiritca, but the result may quite easily have been different had not some of the horses been interfered with at the start. Nevertheless it was an enjoyable day’s outing, and although the totalisator got behind in its closing times, the meeting was very well controlled. Totalisator investments showed a big drop on last year’s figures, a decrease of £3203 being recorded. The amount invested yesterday was £8938 10s* compared with £.12,141 10s on the opening day twelve months ago. An Easy Winner. The Innovation Handicap, the first race of The day. was contested by a poor field, and it was also a poor race. Of £146 invested, Taipare and Mary Audubon carried nearly three-fourths between them. Taipare went to the front at the start and led all the way, to win by half a dozen lengths from Bright Light, with Karma two lengths away. IM ary Audubon, who was slow to strike a gait, faded out of the running after going well for half a mile. A Promising Sort. Bertha Bingen, driven by P. Riddle, was a short-priced favourite for the Foster’s Handicap, carrying three times as much as Item and Hal Huon. The favourite got up at the start but quickly settled down and took charge at the end of a furlong, at which stage Blue Glen broke badly. Hal Huon was with Bertha Bingen along the back, but could not go on with it, and the favourite won easily by eight lengths. Aggie Bell beat the tiring Hal Huon by the best part of a length for second money, and Item was close up fourth. The winner is a full sister to Great Bingen. Win for The Tiger. Nine contested the Kirkwood Handicap, Aliss Native and The Tiger monopolising the betting, with all the others at long prices. The race needs little description, for The Tiger led all the way. ami never made a mistake, whereas all of the others were up in the air at various times, particularly Havland, who wont a good race, taking into consideration the fact that ho broke repeatedly. The Tiger won by eight lengths from Binewood, with Pate six lengths away and Havland and Miss Native next. Cup to Kokiritea. The Cup was spoiled to a big extent by a mix-up at the start and in the next lap by one sulky capsizing. Bicolour was a hot first'fancy, being entrusted with more than twice as much as that invested on the bracket. Kokiritea and Rostrevor, and Lottie Advance. Rona slewed round at the start and interfered with several behind her. Bicolour began well and went to the front right away, and with half the journey covered she was just in front of Lottie Advance, Kokiritea, \ an Rich, Rostrevor and The Shrew in that order. At the crossing Lottie Advance Jost her driver, at which stage she was going wonderfully well. Along the back Kokiritea -was lying just behind the favourite, with Rostrevor and The Shrew some distance back. Three furlongs from home Kokiritea took charge, and with the favourite tiring had little difficulty in winning by ten lengths. Bicolour kept going to get second money by a length from. The Shrew, who was just in front of Bingen King and Rostrevor. Wliy Worry? The Autumn Handicap was won by a good favourite in Why Worry. At the start Moko Chief failed to go off. Cora Tacks, ridden by the versatile horseman, L. G. Al orris, was quickly into her gait, leading into the back stretch from Why Worry, with The Pointer in third place passing the five furlongs. At the half mile the favourite went to the front and kept her position to win nicely by four lengths from Cora Tacks. The Pointer was* then lengths away third, and Pillage fourth. An Easy Winner. Peterson was favourite for the President’s Handicap, and he won in hollow fashion after losing about three seconds at the start. Fair support was also accorded for King Peter and Annette. Gold Lad was quickest to start, but after going three furlongs Peterson wont to the front and maintained his advantage all the way after opening up a big gap in the first mile. Laurier was second, six lengths behind the winner, and a neck in front of Plunder. Sister Beatrice, Bluewood and Annette were next. King Peter capsized his sulky at the start and bolted three miles, interfering with several others before he galloped clear of them. The Pointer Scores. Moko Chief and Typist carried the money in the Morton Memorial. The former got away, all right and then got up badly. Great Kevin led out from the straight from Lockette, Tui Zolock and Jean Darling, but three furlongs .from home the leader was beaten and
there was little between Jean Darling, Tui Zolock, The Pointer and Sungleam entering the home stretch. Hero The Pointer went away and won by two and a-half lengths from Jean Darling, with Tui Zolock half a length away, just in front of Typist and Sungleam. The Final Event. Of the half dozen in the Eastbrook Handicap, Signor wound up a slightly bettor favourite than Taipare, penalised three seconds. Blue Glen went off without a mistake and led all the way. Taipare was always handy, and when he drew up to Blue Glen three furlongs from home it looked as if he would ■win, but Blue. Glen went to the front again and finally won by two lengths. Signor, who was up in the air several times in the first half mile, was fifteen lengths away third, with Nellie Bramley just behind him. DETAILS OF RESULTS Innovation Handicap.
