CAR CAPSIZED
ONE MAN KILLED. TWO OTHERS INJURED. [Per Press Association.* AUCKLAND, Feb. 14. A fatal accident which occurred near the approach to Muriwai Beach at about four o’clock yesterday afternoon marred the day’s gathering for the motor races. A five-seater motor car, driven by a young m: i named A. U. Wells, of Remuera, capsized in the soft sand. It appears that the ear, which contained R. IV. McLellan, of A. S. Patterson and Co’s office, A. F. Henry, of the Battery Supply Company, James D. Walsh, of Ponsonby, and A. J. Nutter, of' Rcmtiera, was going to the beach towards the road, when it had to swerve sharply to avoid another car in front, and capsized. The car turned over quickly, throwing the occupants out, and then righted itself. It was at once seen that three of the party were seriously injured, and an appeal was made for a doctor. Dr. E. R. Abernethy, who happened to be on the beach, and a number of St. John Ambulance workers, left the races, which were being held two miles along the beach, for the scene of the accident. Dr. Abernethy found that McLellan was dead. The other two, who were injured, were Henry and Walsh, who are both suffering from broken limbs and injuries to their backs. The others escaped uninjured. Mattresses were got from the accommodation house and the injured men were sent to the Auckland Hospital. Beyond the breaking of the wind screen and the smashing of the steeringwheel, the car did not sustain any injury. The accident was in no way connected with the racing programme The injured were progressing favourably to-day.
