A SERIOUS DISPUTE

The hitch which has occurred in connection with the third wool sale of the season at Wanganui, fixed for to-morrow, is a serious matter for the growers of wool in the district and for the city. The overseas buyers of wool, numbering more than fifty, complain that an offering of 12.000 bales is too small, and they declare that unless it is increased there will be no sale to-morrow. We have, of course, no knowledge of the reasons behind the Dominion Wool Committee’s restriction of the allocation to 12,000 bales, but, looking at the case put forward by the buyers, we must say that their demand does not appear to be extravagant. That, however, is a matter to be decided by the committee and the buyei-s. Our own interest in the question whether the sale is to take place is more general. If there were no sale growers who are anxious for financial reasons to dispose of their wool would bo placed in a difficulty, which might affect others besides themsalves. If the result of the trouble here were the abandonment of sales throughout the Dominion a great deal of inconvenience and suffering might be caused. So far as Wanganui is concerned failure to hold this week’s sale might lead to complications. It would be a serious matter for Wanganui and other places if the dispute persuaded the buyers to refuse to visit all the centres now included in their itinerary. The growers should have the right to say how they will sell their wool, but the buyers also deserve consideration. It is to be hoped that the Wool Committee will be able to make terms with then?
