During the year ending December 31, 1925, 90,069 person (including crews of vessels) arrived in New Zealand from overseas, compared with 89,627 during 1924, according to the monthly “Abstract of Statistics” just issued. Excluding crews, the number was -'1,843, representing an increase of 2031 over the figures for the previous year. Immigrants intending permanent residence accounted for 15,704 of the arrivals, an increase of 1390 over the 1924 total. The remainder of the arrivals was made up as follows, the corresponding figures for the previous year being shown in parentheses for the purposes of comparison: Tourists, 7898 (7425); permanent residents returning after temporary absences on business or pleasure, 14.024 (14,076); persons coming into the Dominion on business, 2241 (2080); theatrical entertainers, etc., 1193 (1009); persons in transit. 520 (483); others, officials of foreign governments, etc., 194 (328), and r< t stated 72 (100). Departures. The figures shown in the ‘‘Abstract” are subject to slight adjustments on account of supplementary passenger lists which were not to hand. The total of departures for 1925 amounted to 77,267 (including crews) compared with 79,952 in 1924. Excluding crews the number was 29,172, being a decrease of 1421 over the figures for ’1924. Of the departures only 1948 were permanent residents of New Zealand who stated their intention of leaving the country permanently as against 2256 for the previous year. The remainder of the departures consisted of permanent residents departing temporarily, 13,756, and temporary residents departing 13.462. The corresponding figures for 1924 were 15,006 and 13,320 resp ; tively. The actual gain through migration amounted to 12,802 persons, the corresponding figures for 1924 being 9675. Foreign Nationals. The importance of these two classes of migrants warrants special attention, and it should be noted that whereas the former amounted to 15,704, only 1948 persons left New Zealand with the stated intention of permanent residence elsewhere. As usual the movement of population was mainly within the Empire. Of the new immigrants only 894 claimed nationality other than British, and this figure represents an increase of 61 over 1924. The influx of foreign nationals from the Southern European countries of Yugoslavia, Italy, and Greece, which was so marked during 1924, was again a feature of special interest. The number of Italian subjects who arrived in New Zealand for the purpose of permanently residing amounted to 262, compared with 52 in 1924 and 25 in 1923. Yugoslavia nationals showed a decrease compared with 1924, the figures being 350 a-d 447 respectively. In the case of Greeks the figures were 29 and 19. There are no previous outstanding features displayed in the movement of race aliens as compared with the previous year.
