WEMBLEY GAUDS
THRONES AT A DISCOUNT. Unexpected difficulties arose when the big gilded wooden thrones on which the King and Queen sat in the Stadium during the opening ceremony of Wembley Exhibition were presented by tire exhibition authorities to St. John’s Church, Wembley. So large are the thrones —which are in one piece—-that they could not be got through the door of the church, and it was found that, they would have to be cut in two first. As this could not be done for some days, the dedication service, for which Sir Henry McMahon had arrived to represent the exhibition, had to be cancelled, and it was decided to accommodate the thrones temporarily in the drill hall. Eor nearly three-quarters of an hour about twenty exhibition attendants and others were engaged in conveying the thrones to the hall. Here, again, however, it was found that the thrones were too large to be got inside. Faced with this final obstacle, the only course was to prop the throne.s up outside the hall and cover them with an oil sheet until such time as they could he separated and placed inside.
