PUBLIC PROTESTS

N.S.W. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL Memorial to dominion office THE GOVERNMENT'S MANDATE SYDNEY, Feb. 4. The memorial protesting against the abolition of the Legislative Counici was handed to the Governor with a request that he forward it to the Dominions’ Office. The signatories to the memorial sub- ! nut, inter alia, that the Government came into office with a limited man- , date, that the constitutional procedure for reconciling the differences between the two Houses has not been followed, j that the facts and constitutional posi- : tion bearing on the appointment of additional members and on the abolitii i of the Council were not accurately or fully put before the Governor by the M inistcr, that the abolition of the Council is definitely excluded from the policy upon which the Government was returned to power, and was therefore not approved by the people, that abolition is p. fundamental alteration of the constitution which should not be made until it has been approved by the people. A citizens’ petition praying that the King withhold his signature has now been drawn up and will be circulated in all parts of the State. All arrangements have been made for holding protest meetings throughout New South Wales and for a monster meeting in Sydney.
