Sandon Riding.—The usual road maintenance works have been carried out on the various roads in this riding. The land acquired at O’Brien’s Corner has been fenced and the gorse cleared away, and arrangements should be made with the Telegraph Department to set back the telegraph pole to the fence line. A small pipe culvert is crushed in at the above corner and it would be advisable to replace the culvert in concrete as the covering is too light for a pipe culvert. Mt. Stewart Riding.—-During last month I had the four bridges on the Feilding-Awahuri road painted, and also erected a new fence on each side of the embankment near Awahuri. Maintenance metal is now being carted from the Makino Creek and tipped in dumps along the Feilding Road. Before we can cart metal across the bridge on Boness’ Road it will be necessary to strengthen the bridge. I have had an offer for the carting of metal out of Makino Creek and Oroua River at 5/6 per yard. I think it might be advisable to consider the offer.

Kawa Kawa Riding.—Messrs Drinkwater and Candy are iiow metaling Mr. E. R. Saunders road and under favourable conditions will complete their contract during the present month. Metal has been carted and weak places patched along the main drain and Hollows roads. Carnarvon Riding.—Messrs Drinkwater and Candy have completed their contract for forming, metalling and claying 50 chains of road in the Tangimoana township. The tractor and grader have been employed in turning up River Bank and Rosina Roads, and we intend grading up Campion’s Road as soon as the tractor and grader is available. Awahou Riding.—.—l have made arrangements with Messrs G. & J. Coleyb to cart metal on the Foxton-Shannon Road for the sum of 9/- per yard. The work is now being proceeded with and a fair length of road put in order. AVhirokino Bridge.—AVe are now replacing the running planks on this bridge and hope to have this work completed in a week or two, with a passing place for cars only in the centre of the bridge, and two other passing places are provided for cars on each side of the centre. Fairfiicld Road. —Mr. T. V. Jessop’s contract for formation work on the Fairfield Road should be cancelled, as the work has been on hand for over a year and there is no sign of the work being completed this summer. Tramway Manager’s Report. The volume of traffic was poor, the chief items being: Minerals and manures 128 tons, merchandise 50£ tons, stock 51 trucks, wool 103 bales. Fares amounted to £2 4s 9d. The accounts show a debit of £l6O 5s for the month’s working. Traffic Inspector’s Report. Since last Council meeting my time has been taken up in patrolling the ' County and regulating traffic at Hima- | tangi on Foxton race days, 22nd and 23rd January last. Two informations I have been laid against owners of wandering stock, and Jour informations for breaches of motor regulations, to be heard on 13th inst. at Bulls. Re birds’ eggs. I made inquiries at the Kairanga County Office re price paid for birds ’ eggs and the clerk informed me that they had not been buying for some two or three jaars. but when they

were doing so they paid 4d per dozen. They arranged with the schoolmasters in the* County to receive the eggs from the boys and furnish returns as to the number destroyed, and then forwarded cheques to pay the boys. If the Council decides to buy eggs next season I would suggest that they include birds’ heads. Say blackbirds, thrushes and sparrows at 6d per dozen.
