UPPER TUTAENUI DORCAS SOCIETY. GARDEN PARTY IN AID OF DR. BARNARDO’S HOMES. The inclement weather on Wednesday prevented the Upper Tutae Dorcas Society from holding its garden party in Grey’s Bush, and an adjournment had to be made to the Tutaenui Social Hall, where a fairly successful sale of work resulted. The stalls were presided over by the follow’ing ladies:—Sewing, Mrs A. Williams and Mrs Coles; produce, Mrs A. C. Snellgrove and Mrs Wm. Harvey; sweets, Mrs Freeman; afternoon tea, Mrs John Me Jarrow and Miss Jefferson and helpers. Those in charge of competitions were; cake, Win. James Me Jarrow; ham. Miss M. Miller; nightdress, Miss Selina Jefferson. Mrs D. Galpin (secretary) acted as supervisor and a good deal of the success is due to her for her untiring labour. In the evening a concert was held, at which the following assisted in vocal and instrumental items: Mrs J. Gibson, Miss Joan Sutcliffe, the Misses McDonald, Mrs N. Bell, Mr and Mrs McNab, Miss Al. Gould, Al. and J. Sutcliffe, Air T. Low (zither solo) Air A. O. Scott and Air AlcNab (violin solo). Competitions resulted as follows: Nightdress, Airs A. Johnston and Air L. Patterson tied, the former winning in the draw; nail driving, ladies, Airs James AfeJarrow, and Airs I. Jefferson (consolation); nail driving, men, Alcssrs T. Low and H. Dawbin (equal) and Al. Granville (consolation); ham, Airs W. Harvey; cake, Airs J. Gibson. Dancing was afterwards indulged in to music supplied by Aliss Joan Sutcliffe, and Air J. Sutcliffe acted as AI-.C. Considering the adverse circumstances under which the function was held it proved very successful and it is estimated that £3O wil be available for the Homes.

A WONDERFUL RECORD. Air E. E. H. Snellgrove has resigned the position of sexton to St. Stephen’s Parish Church, Alarton, and the vestrv has decided to accept this as dating from June 1, until which time Air Snellgrove is granted leave of absence. He will then have completed 50 years of service. ACTRESS AND DANCER. BLANCHE SWEET IN “HIS SUPREM E Al OAI ENT. ’ ’ Blanche Sweet never requires the services of a double in scenes where she is called upon to execute difficult solo dances. In “His Supreme Aloment, ” the George Fitzmaurice production in which she is featured with Ronald Colman, Aliss Sweet plays the role of a Broadway actress and dancer. Two of her dance numbers, an Oriental fantasy and a wild Spanish fandango, are presented on the screen in natural colour by the improved technicolour process by which a portion of this Gold-wyn-Fitzmaurice picture was photographed. In addition to Blanche Sweet and Ronald Colman, the cast of “His Supreme Afomcnt” includes Jane Winton, Belle Bennett, Cyril Chadwick, Ned Sparks and Nick de Ruiz. The story is an adaptation of May Edgington’s new novel, and will be First National’s screen offering at the Alarton Town Hall to-morrow evening. GARRISON BAND. On Sunday the Wanganui Garrison Band will give two concerts in Marton, one hi the park in the afternoon and the other in the hall at night. Included in the programme will be the Dunedin selections, “Faust” (Berloiz) and “Dor Freischutz, ” and the band’s own choice operatic selection, “William Tell” (Swift). This selection was played by the band a fortnight ago, and the critics were highly delighted with the performance. Vocal and instrumental talent will also be heard. The feature of the day will be the band’s exhibition of the Quickstep for Dunedin, which will be given on the park ground during the afternoon. The band is well-known for its ability in this phase of work, having to its credit twelve first prizes. Given good weather, the Alarton public arc assured of a good day’s entertainment. A silver collection will be taken up to defray the band’s expenses to the Dunedin contest. In the event of wet weather the band will give both recitals in the hall. This will be the only chance the residents of Alarton will have of hearing the band, which is well up to contest form, before the Dunedin Band Contest. SATURDAY’S CRICKET.
