TEAM’S RETURN VICTORS LEAVE J~LSON TO-NIGHT Advice was received in Wanganui last nighr to the effect that the team would leave Nelson by to-night’s boat, returning home (with the Hawke Cup) tomorrow. THE THIRD TIME CUP BACK IN WANGANUI STORY OF MANY QUESTS (By “L.8.W.”) After a grim three-day struggle, in which both sides had their backs to the wall, Wanganui have won the Hawke Cup. Each day every run had to be earned, for the slow scoring speaks of good bowling. That Wanganui ran up a total of 150 runs for five wickets at the end of the third day, when the pitch was showing unmistakable signs of weak, was no mean feat. It is all the more remarkable by reason of the fact that Nelson, since winning the trophy from Wanganui three seasons ago, have succeeded in withstanding a dozen challenges, a record of which the southern association has every reason to be proud. One of the earliest holders of the Hawke Cup—presented by Lord Hawke for competition among the minor associations of the Dominion, viz, any association outside of Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, and Otago—was Southland, and in a subsequent series of matches Rangitikei captured the Cup. This was about three seasons prior to the war. Southland secured the trophy, and it was in 1912 that a Wanganui team, under the captaincy of R. Sanders, made the journey to Hamilton with a rather weak side, and suffered defeat. South Auckland Beaten. In the following year Wanganui made another pilgrimage to the hub of the Waikato, and this time they won comfortably, the team then going on to Auckland and shaping very well against teams in the northern city. Included I in that eleven were the late 11. M. But- | terworth, one of the Dominion’s best , batsmen, a much loved Collegiate School master who lost his life in the Great War; Holland, Orton, Howard, Tracy, and others whose names have slipped the memory. Held For Seven Years. This victory was followed by many others both before and during the war, and Wanganui held the Hawke Cup fr.r seven years before Poverty Bay, who had challenged unsuccessfully on two previous occasions, lifted the trophy at the Ahey to* to -wreh rwj Xher. feent *fo -&W- • aturaie—ix ilfill) -tad Mhllj—but.
