EMPLOYEES OF STATE
TOTAL EXCEEDS 55,000 LOCAL BODIES HAVE 23,742 WAGES BILL OF £18,000,000 An estimate of the number of persons employed by the State and local authorities in New Zealand has been made by the Government Statistician and is published in the latest issue of the Year Book. He places the total at 79,000, whose salaries and wages amount to £18,000.000. A similar compilation was made in 1915, when the total was estimated at 60,000 with an aggregate annual remuneration of about £8,000,000. The investigation of the position at March 31, 1925, though dependent upon estimation in some respects, is based upon more nearly complete statistics than that, of ton years ago.
