ADVENTUROUS WOMAN
AVIATION AS A BUSINESS. SUCCESSFUL SOLO FLIGHTS. Tn ever-widening curves an aeroplane climbed into the clouds from the Wigram aerodraine (Christchurch) on Sunday, and began a game of hide and seek. Experienced eyes followed it whenever it reappeared, until finally in a spiral it swooped downwards, bounding lightly as it touched the ground. When it stopped, Mrs Gladys Sandford, who hopes to be the first woman aviator to gain a pilot’s ticket in the Dominion, descended. She had made her first solo flight successfully. Until Sunday Mrs Sandford ha* flown in a dual control machine under guidance of an instructor, but her progress has been rapid. When she has completed four hours of solo flying her course will be completed. “Nervous?” said Mrs Sandford, with a laugh, when asked how she felt when flying alone. “Not a bit. It’s great fun, and there isn’t anything to feel nervous about. It’s inspiring.” Given fine weather Mrs Sandford will complete the course early this week, and then will return to Auckland, where she intends to exploit the possibilities of commercial aviation. If not successful in the Dominion she may go to America.
