WAITOTARA.

SCHOOL PICNIC (From the “Chronicle’s” Special Correspondent). The Waitotara School held the annual picnic and prize-giving in the Domain grounds on Friday. There was a largo attendance of pupils and parents and the day was beautifully fine. Mr Tavendale, chairman of the School Committee, spoke words of encouragement and congratulations to the children. He paid a tribute to the head teacher, Mr Taylor, and Miss Poynter for their successful teaching during the year. Previous to the breaking-up ceremony opportunity was taken by the pupils to make a small presentation of a fountain pen to Miss Poynter who is leaving. Every child in the school received a book, and the Standard VI. prizes were Boys’ and Girls’ Own Annuals. Every child under six received a toy and a bag of lollies, and every child who did not win something received a sixpence. The committee wishes to thank the donors of special prizes and cash donations. The school prize list is as follows: Class Prizes: —Primer 1: Doris Martin. Primer 2: Emmett Leahy 1. The weather has been all that could be desired, -which has been a good help for shearing. The wool is coming in fast and keeping the railway staff busy. They expect a record season. Tb chairman, Mr H. Grove, wishes to convey his thanks to all those who helped to make the opening of the Memorial Gates such a success.
