NEW ZEALAND JERSEYS
AN IMPORTANT BREED The fact that Vol. 22 of the New Zealand Jersey Herd Book has made its appearance, shows how well established this famous breed is in the Do : minion. Registrations in the herd I book now number 29,172. In the Ad- ' v>anced Register of Merit there are the ! names of several hundred Jerseys in New Zealand, with butter-fat yields I ranging from 3001 b of butter-fat to I over 10001 b., which proves the dairying value of this breed. I Considering that at the last agriculI tural census there were, in this country, 28,554 purebred Jerseys against 8177 Friesians, 3832 Ayrshircs and 2969 milking Shorthorns, and that they numbered fully half of all the purebred cattle in New Zealand, their effect on ; the dairying industry of New Zealand is pronounced, and if one adds that there are no less than 883.070 crossbred dairy cattle with a predominating strain of Jersey 'and other Channel Island breeds, it will bo seen that an enormous output of dairy produce largely depends upon this breed.
