DEAR BUTTER

PUBLIC WON’T BUY MERCHANTS LOSE FORTUNES. RESULT OF CONTINUED FALL. LONDON, Dec. 20. The “Westminster Gazette” states that the continued fall in Danish butter resulted in London merchants losing fortunes. It is explained that, the Germans caused a shortage in July, buying largely in anticipation of im port duties. They redoubled their purchases when the Australian and New Zealand strike began. Meantime Britishers frantically bought cagoes on route, also Danish, whose prices soared. The public refused to cat dear butter, preferring to pat margarine. The resumption of Australian and New Zealand shipments on an unexpectedly large- scale flooded the market, and merchants are now selling Danish at fid per lb. less than they paid for it.
