THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “Early Bird.”) Royal Blood was scratched for the Auckland Railway Handicap at 1.10 p.m. yesterday. Racing at Ellerslie. Awapuni, New Plymouth, Waipukurau. Dunedin and Westport on Saturday. Boxing Day. Including the Ford ell team, about Thirty horses fr« m Wanganui will be s -*on in action at Ellerslie, Awapuni anti New Plymouth on Saturday. .1. Barrv is to ride Te Monantii and Oration at Auckland next Saturday. It was given out that W. H. Jones was to be on Oration, but that announcement was incorrect. Te Monanui’s preparation is proceeding satisfactorily. On Saturday morning he accounted for Mountain Bell over a mile, the last seven furlongs taking Imin. 32| »<•<-.<, the Cup candidate doing it well. Muraahi. who was foaled in 1917. and who is now eight years old. is found carrying himself well. The son of ('ampfire, it may be remarked, was not called upon to race before he attained the age • three years and at that period he onlyvontested three races at the back end of the season. It is not. therefore. Mirprising to find him a well preserved ret eran.

Of the original 51 horses engaged in :he Auckland Cup. 15 have survived the final payment. All the fancied candidates are among those still eligible to compete. The popular fancies just now ire The Banker, Rapine, Haze and count Cavour. Tr is remarked by a Sydney writer lh«t at one period of Windbag’s career matters did nnt appear at al! promising for his standing a strong preparation. It is claimed for Windbag that he came through a severe ordeal during the recent spring campaign in a manner sup porting the view that he is sounder now than at any previous stage of his career. Muraahi is once again on hand at Ellerslie in order to contest the Auckland < lip. and should he figure among the starters for the big rare next Saturday

—a very likely circumstance —he will isve the record of figuring in the cup Sold in four successive years. In the *■»•■•? nf 1922 he finished unplaced und-*r ii.fl. in the following y<nr he carried 1.4 and ran a dead heat with To Kara 7.6», and in last year’3 race Muraahi ran unplaced under 8.1. The gallop of Thursday morning at Hawera which attracted most attention was a try-out over If miles by the ~nd Cup candidate. The Banker • Ingram and the Great Northern Derby candidate. Star Area (lightweight), -ays the ‘’Star.” Jumping off at the two furlong post, both horses kept together (running the first half mile in Sflsees and were picked up by Mar

zpieteiir Morri’) at the six furlong post. From that point the three horses wore in a line the whole way (Star \ rea on the fence. The Banker in the centre, and Marqueteur on the outside >. and there were only heads between them at the finish. The full journey took 2min. lOsers. Both horses went well, especially The Banker, and the effort, which was a creditable one. must have been pleasing to the horses’ connections. Marqueteur. who is not nominated at the holiday meetings, is showing all his old dash, and although getting up in years, has only to stand up to his work to do further service to his ?wner. Prior to leaving for Auckland Muraahi did a solid preparation, and is very forward. Track work, however, suggests that The Banker is the more likely cup winner of the pair. The Avondale Jockey <’lub has been informed by the Hon. R. F. Bollard that in consequence of the work of remodelling the Avondale racecourse, the club’s next Autumn and Spring meetings may be held at Ellerslie. Katakana i* galloping exceptionally well on his home track, and is encouraging his party to believe that he will win the Manawatu Cup. It is quite on the cards that he will run well in the race, but whatever he docs < n the tracks he will be at a good price on Boxing Day 51* he has yet to deliver the goods in public. Imperial Spark has made a remarkable recovery t r oni his recent accident, and most like ]v he will be raced on the second day nf the Manawatu meeting. A. D. Webster went south on Saturday with First Acre, who is to compete at the Dunedin

j The Kilbruney gelding No Favours. ! who has just joined Degage in T. I Young’s stable, was given easy exercise on the tan. He lightened up considerably as the result of his racing j at Woodville and travelling, but he is i now beginning to pick up a little. Riccarton. The work at Riccarton was confined To the plough track. It had been heavily watered over-night, and despite the fart that there was a cold wind in evidence, some useful times were recorded. Cornstalk, whose prospects of winning the Okain *s Trial Stakes at the Banks Peninsula meeting were viewed in a favourable light, hurt his leg after galloping the day before, and will require a few days’ spell. Hawera. The weather was dull but fine for training operations on the Hawera track. As on Thursday all work was t done on the plough, which was a trifle slower.

Ihe first to work were Bine Peter and Beuzora, who went five furlongs in 1.35, with Blue Peter a length in front.

•Shut-eye gave Bunny Vale a break of three or four lengths over five fur lungs, and just failed to catch him. Shut-eye’s time was 1.2|. •San Fera, Bunogue, Buiiuna, Partaga. Marqueteur, Lady Bentinck, and a number of others did pace work. Merle and Bisox were restricted to slow work and were to gallup later in the day.

bunshot had Empire Camp as a com panion uver seven furlongs, and was several lengths ahead at the finish, ’lime, 1.34.
