OKOIA SCHOOL

CONCERT AND SOCIAL. DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES. An exceedingly pleasant evening was spent at the Okoia Hall on Friday, when the school social and prize-giving took place. The proceedings commenced with the singing of the National Anthem, and then followed a short concert programme by the school children, assisted by several grownups. The children’s items included the following:—Songs, 1 ‘Golden Vanity,” “Sweet and Low,” “Now is the Month of Maying,” “Swing Song” (with solo by little Eileen Brandon, who charmed the audience), “Blue Bird” (with trio by Maurice McGrail, Bill Naughton, and Bruce Oliver); recitations, “Glory of the Garden,” by Eileen Coe; “The Story of Jim,” by Maurice McGrail and Bill Naughton; pianoforte solos by Grace Brandon and Dulcie Hogg; vocal solos by Oliver McGrail and Nancy Brandon. These were all vociferously applauded by an enthusiastic audience. In addition to these items, two little pupils of Miss M. Swan, the Misses Bridges, performed three dances, “Irish Jig,” “Military Dance,” and “Dutch Dance,” and were deservedly encored for their danty dancing. Popular items by assisting grown-ups were: Vocal solus Miss Marjorie Yorke and Miss D. B. Martin; humorous recitations by Mr D. O’Donnell, and a pianoforte duet by Miss Martin and Miss Gaunt, A. These were all enthusiastically encored. Miss Gaunt was of great assistance in playing accompaniments in her usual artistic manner. Prizes were then presented by the chairman of the School Committee, Mr J. E. Wilson, who performed this duty in his usual pleasant and genial way. After the presentation of prizes, supper, kindly provided by the ladies, was handed round, and of course proved a very popular item. The peanut comj petition was won by Nola Bradley, ami iihe cat competition by Olive .McGrail. The chairman then thanked the par 1 ents and friends for their interest in the school and congratulated the teacher on her results for the year and the general satisfaction she was giving. Mr I. Brandon, another member of the School Committee, then called for three cheers fur the Dux of the school. These were heartily given, evidencing ! the popularity of the girl in question, ’Eileen Coe. The singing of ‘‘Auld ! Lang Syne” brought the children’s part of*the evening to a happy close.
