DISASTER IN STAFFORDSHIRE RESCUERS' ALL-NIGHT TASK NUMBER OF MINERS MISSING Received Dec. 20, 5.5 p.m. (Reuter) LONDON, .19. An explosion in the Birchen wood Colliery, Kidsgrove, Staffordshire, occurred when the afternoon shift was still below ground. Fire followed the explosion. Rescuers rushed to the scene and worked heroically all night and saved all except seven men, the body of one of whom was brought up this morning. Rescue efforts were later abandoned owing to the rapid spread of the fire.
