ROWING

INTER.COLLEGIATE RACE CLUB COMMENT. (By * ‘ Coxswain.”) Th© annual inter-Collegiate boat race between Wanganui Collegiate School and Christ’s College (Christchurch) will be rowed this morning at 10 o’clock, at dead low water. The course will be from Webb’s shed to Calver ’s corner, a distance of oue mile. The Christ’s College crew, together with their coach, Mr. A. J. Dunn, arrived from the South on Friday. The names and weights of the crews a r e as follows: — Collegiate School:—G. Taylor, stroke. 10.2.; A. C. Williams. 13.2; C. A. Steel, 12.2; F. W. Jull, bow, 11.8; E. C. Liburn, cox, 5.3. Christ’s College:—H. H. Elworthv, stroke 11.10; P. H. M. Williams. 12.2; J. C. Robertson. 10.9; J. W. Biddles, bow. 13.0; A. Acton-Adams, cox, 7.0. Emergencies: R. J. Nicholson and P. Whyte. Both crews were nut for n final spin on Saturday afternoon and completed their training with a good wind opener. All the boys are in the pink of condition. and they can be depended upon ♦o row the race of their lives this morning.

UNION BOAT CLUB Racing for th© four-oar trophy commenced on Friday evening, when the first heat was decided. A Moss defeated E. Gullery by two lengths. After au even start, Gullery soon obtained a lead of half a length, which he increased to a length at the bridge. At th© groyne Moss commence! to draw level and for some distance raced on level terms. At the halfmile. Moss drew out and gradually increased his lead, winning comfortably by two lengths. On Saturday afternoon, two more heats were decided, A. Moss defeating J. C. Aitkin by a lengfh after a good race. Aitkin led for the greater part of the distance, but Moss, finishing strongly, came up to win by a length. The next h«at was rowed between F. Crotty and F. Gullery, Gullery taking over the crew of E. Crotty, who was indisposed. This proved the best race of the series. After a good start they raced together to the bridge, when Crotty gained a slight lead, which he increased to a length at the half mile. At the baths, Gullery challenged and reduced the gap, and a great race finished in Crotty's favour by- naif i length. Racing will be continued this evening.

WANGANUI CLUB The main event at the Wanganui I’lnb on Saturday afternoon was the commencement of the Fitzherbert t Fours. The competing crews were 5 stroked by R. Lett and C. V. Thurston respectively. To the surprise of rowing '■ enthusiasts this contest turned out to ; be one of the most exciting races that I has been witnessed for mhny years. Thurston passed Lett within two yards of the winning post and won a great ' finish by half a canvas. Both boats moved together at the start, but at the end of the first hundred yards Lett h’ad a good half length lead of his opponent.
