HEAVY TRAFFIC
WANGANUI COUNTY COUNCIL TAKES A STAND. INSPECTORS APPOINTED TO OPERATE IN DISTRICT. Comment was made at Friday’s meeting of the Wanganui County Council of the fact that motor lorry owners were deliberately reducing their loads at the city boundary in order to defeat the local authorities in regard to the proper collection of heavy traffic fees. This practice was being indulged in consequent upon the Wanganui City Council commencing operations with i “ loadomcters.” I The authorities in No. 9 heavy traffic ’district, it was explained, were losing i £l5OO, approximately, as a result of under-registration. The clerk (Mr. G. Darbyshire) reported upon the deliberations of the reicent conference of local body executive officers, engineers and inspectors, and intimated that uniform control of the heavy traffic regulations was likely to be the outcome. The necessity for grappling with the heavy traffic problem was stressed by councillors, and, on the motion of the chairman (Mr. A. D. Mackintosh), it • was decided that Inspectors G. Fear, i .T. Delves and McKenzie (Rangitikei) ' be appointed inspectors for the Wangai nui County.
: The chairman stated there was no I doubt that some lorry owners were ' under-registering. He, himself, had seen lorries on the No. 1 Line carrying I more than the specified load. The j Railway Department set a standard of 35 butter boxes to the ton, and from i the loads he had observed, some lor- ■ ries were carrying more than their cori rect quota. I Mr. W. E. Broderick said the same thing applied to wool. He had seen as | many as twenty-four bales on one lorry.
