ROYAL SHOW

OPENED BY GOVERNORGENERAL GREAT PROGRESS OF CANTERBURY. COMPARED WITH 52 YEARS AGO. [Per Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 12. The Royal Show was continued today, there being a very large attendance of the public. To-morrow is Petopic’s Day. The show was officially opened to-day by the Governor-General. Sir Charles was attended by Lady Alice Fergusson and was welcomed to the show by Mr W. Perry, President of the Royal New Zealand A. and P. Association, and by the Hon. W. Nosworthy, Minister of Agriculture. Mrs Perry pinned the life badges of the Royal Asa ,ociation to the coat lapels of His E> ellency and Mr N osworthy. “It gives Lady Alice and myself pleasure not only to be present at such an historical event as the first Royal Show in the South Island, but also to meet those who contribute mainly to the prosperity of the Dominion,” said’ His Excellency. “To me it is an ex traordinarily interesting thing to compare Canterbury when I was here as a boy 52 years ago with the province as J see it to-day. It shows the great do velopment of Canterbury that it can have a show better than that which many of the older countries can have?’ His Excellency said that his birthday happened to coincide with the granting of the charter to the Royal A. and P Association on January 17, 1924. That fact gave him personal interest in ils success. He hoped everyone wou?d realise that their happiness and contentment rested upon the pastoral and agri cultural development of the Dominion.

It was a minute or so after he had resumed his seat that His Excellency remembered that he had overlooked the little matter of formally opening the show, an error he promptly rectified, amid laughter. His Excellency then proceeded to the new cattle pavilion and declared it open.
