THE SPRING SHOW

PEOPLE’S DAY

A LARGE CROWD ATTEND

MOST SUCCESSFUL OCCASION

The prospects lor a successful • People’s Day at the Wanganui Agricultural Association’s Fifty-first Hhow. did not look bright yesterday morning, when light showers fell intermittently ■ and the skies were leaden. However,) at midday, lor tune smiled on the Asso- ’ •iation, the skies cleared, and the sun : *hone enticing!}. By one o clock all j roads led to the racecourse, and, I throughout the afternoon, crowds! thronged the ground and participated ; in the fun of the fair. The numerous side-shows and circuses were well pat- ■ ionised throughout the day. while the ■ merry-go-rounds and “ocean wave , held their usual a traction lor the young I folk. The trade displays and nidus- . trial exhibitions held the interest of j patrons, more particularly the motor * section which was replete with everything modern, in automobiles ‘and their 1 equipment. and was fully representative of the motor trade. As usual, the cattle. * sheep and pig sections proved one of the features of the exposition, and the ■ tine types of animals penned earned . the admiration of both country and city ■ visitors. The principal attraction was the , jumping competition, which attracted . large entries from far and near, and • produced riding, which, in the opinion of experts, was equal to, if not better than, anything seen in any show ring in the Dominion for some years. Keen interest was manifested in the various events, and crowds filled the stand ‘and ’ encircled the enclosure all through the • afternoon. Remarkably few mistakes were made at the difficult jumps the , turf being excellent for this kind of sport —and consequently the judges j were presented with an exceedingly aiffi cult task in discriminating between th.riders. Although a number of outside riders were competing in all classes, and the prize money wins well distributed, local riders generally held - their own. The fixture on the whole proved one of tho most successful that has been conducted for some considerable time, and everyone was particularly well catered for in every conceivable direction. Everything in connection with the exhibition went off smoothly and according to schedule, and the energetic secretary’ (Mr F. G. Seddon), the assiduously working committee and the officials generally are to be complimented on the manner in which they executed their respective duties. GRAND PARADE • o’clock, interest centred in the grand parade of all the animals penned tor exhibition. The parade was splvn di div marshalled, and punctually to sereduled time the animals were lined up in front of the main grandstand for the public’s scrutiny. Cattle came first, the Jersev strain, which predominated, occupying pride of place. The various breeds were shown off to advantage, and a pleasing spectacle was presented when all the exhibits were txrra.nged in position. lolloping till cattle came children on Shetland ponies, and. fair epuestriennes on well groomed, stately jumpers. Next in order name draught horses, which coni prised one of the best collections yet seen in Wanganui. Spring eart horses completed the display, which assisted to stamp the show ns one of the most memorable in history. THE GATE TAKINGS flie fate-takings disclosed Un increase of something like £2OO. when compared with last year s figures. Eor the two days tho receipts amounted to £516. yesterday’s takings alone

segregating £474. The increase, how-I ever, must be largely attributable to the faet that the charge for admission to the grounds has been increased from ; Is to 2s. On the other hand, the number of members’ tickets has in- . creased greatly, due to the organised campaign in this connection conducted j during the recent Queen carnival. The latter would have a tendency to de-1 crease the receipts at the gate.
