AMUSEMENTS, MEETINGS, ETC.

MUNICIPAL PICTURES. DOUBLE FEATURE PROGRAMME. The Opera House was packed to the doors last evening to witness the initial screenings of the special double feature programme. The star picture “The Lost Chord,” is based on the immortal song of that name. The theme of the story is that of a faithful love of a man that can outlive even death. The power of music to reach the heart of a woman is vividly presented and the tender pathos of loving hearts parted is softened and made sweet by the promise of ultimate reunion. In the cast are many wellknown names, among them Alice Lake, Faire Binney, Dagmar Godow’sky, David Powell and Henry Sedley. These stars are not only celebrated, but they are exceedingly well chosen for the various parts in" this picture. The box plans arc at H. I. Jones and Son’s.

COOK’S GARDENS TO-NIGHT.

FIREWORKS DISPLAY AND GUY COMPETITION. To-night’s competition of “guys” has not only aroused considerable interest amongst the juvenile element, but is also attracting the attention of parents, especially the fathers of living boys. Several fathers have been called on to assist their male offspring in the making of “guys” for the competition and big parade. This, of course, is not without a certain amount of amusement for “dad,” for it recalls to him the days of his boyhood when he participated in the time honoured custom of mounting a dummy on a chair, or in a box, and walked the streets soliciting pennies for the inevitable crackers and bonfire. The novelty of the competition and the attractiveness of the parade are bound to draw a large attendance to Cook’s Gardens tonight, especially as there is to be a great display of fireworks by the well known Wainoni Park Fireworks Company. The pyrotechnical entertainment will include a large array of novelties. Set-pieces, mechanical sets, showers of golden rain, shells with multi-coloured stars, rockets and serpent mines are only a few of the novelties which will be fired, and the concluding feature of the night will be the firing and blowing up of a giant “guy,” together with the aerial ex- 1 tinction of those “guys” whom the competitors do not desire to take homo again. This novel entertainment is being promoted by the Queen Alexandra Band. The parade of guys will leave the Drill Hall at 7 o’clock headed by the Queen Alexandra Band, proceed down the Avenue to Ridgeway Street, back along the Avenue to Guyton Street. All guys to enter by Guyton Street entrance. The prices of admission to the Gardens are adults Is, children 6d, with 6d extra for the enclosure.

SISTINE SOLOISTS’ FAREWELL. BOX PLANS OPEN THIS MORNING. This morning at H. I. Jones and Son Ltd., the box plans will be opened for the farewell concert to be given by the celebrated Sistine Choir Soloists in the Opera House, Wanganui, next Monday evening. In view of the extraordinary popularity of these fine singers it may safely be assumed that there will be a brisk demand for seats. A concert by the soloists is a musical treat of a kind all too rare in these parts, and local music-lovers should not be slow to take advantage of this last opportunity of hearing them before their return to the Land of Song. An entirely new programme is announced for the farew’ell concert, but doubtless many of the most popular numbers heard here before will be repeated as encore numbers. The first part of the pro-, gramme will be devoted to the old Italian Madrigals, Motets etc., which are a feature of ho Soloists’ present tour, and which will be presented in the elaborate costumes of the Goldonian period. There will also be the usual selection of operatic choruses, duets and arias, together with a few folk songs and ballads. The principal soloists are Signori Paganelli, Burani, Facchini, Belli, Sarti and Auchner. Maessro Casolari will again fill the dual role of conductor and accompanist.
