By Whom Shall New Zealand Be Governed? I Democracy imposes on the people a serious duty and responsibility. Where its method obtains, the people have to choose their legislators, and upon their choice depends the good or ill government of their country. Wisely exercised, their democratic rights endow the people with the means of opening up new and better ways of life; misused thoughtlessly and without care, they will prove their undoing. To-day the Electors of New Zealand have to decide whether this country shall be managed by servants of the wealthy or by representatives of the workers whose labours sustain the nation. The choice should not be difficult. The record of the mis-named Reform Party has been one of brazen pampering of the rich. The profiteers own and control it, and their power rests with a monopoly of the Press, which they have always used to poison the public mind and vilify and slander their opponents. But, their Press and money notwithstanding, their political party has never represented a majority of the people.

This minority Government has reduced wages and raided the cupboards of the workers; it has muddled the provision of shelter, and slums abound; it has voted against Motherhood Endowment; it has ruined returned soldiers by giving millions to its squatter friends in fictitious prices for land. Social problems have been met with its neglect. Its main concern has been to provide facilities for banks, insurance companies, shipping combines and squatters to rob the people of New Zealand. It is the slave of Mammon and the enemy of every democratic aspiration.

Mr. Veitch and his party have on ail occasions helped to keep the Reformers in office. Only one force opposes this political combination of the vested interests with any sincerity and with any prospect of success, and this is the Labour Party. This Party is a People’s Party, and it aims at the abolition of poverty and the realisation of social justice. Its first care will be the well-being of the children, the aged, the mothers and the workers. IT STANDS FOR HUMANITY ABOVE MONEY AND PROFITS. AWAY WITH THE IDOLATORS OF MONEY ! VOTE LABOUR ! Save the people from the cruelty and greed ol i Toryism.
