SEMI-FINALS IN LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP TWO OTAGO PLAYERS REMAIN IN [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Oct. 21. Perfect weather conditions — bright sunshine, with a light breeze—saw the opening of the fourth round of tho Dominion Ladies’ Golf Championship, in which Mrs Dodgshun (Otago) met Miss Jervis (Hutt), and Mrs J. Cook (Otago) played Miss Withers (Geraldine). With tho championship in an interesting stage considerable interest was taken in both matches, the “galleries” amounting to several hundreds, most of whom were ladies, but’ with a fair sprinkling of men. The course was absolutely perfect. Mrs Dodgshun’s Win The greater number of spectators followed the game between Mrs Dodgshun and Miss Jervis, which was won by the former by 3 up and 2. The young Hutt player put up an excellent fight, but could not hold her more experienced opponent, whose steady short play and iron shots were difficult to beat. To make matters worse, Miss Jervis was apparently rather overawed by the responsibility of her position and was obviously nervous, this being particularly noticeable on the greens, where she missed a number of short putts, which under other circumstances she would have had no difficulty with. Steady Play Succeeds. Mrs Cook beat Miss Withers, 4 up and 3. Mrs Cook won her game by steadier all-round golf than that of her opponent. Both players were driving equally long balls, but Mrs Cook had the advantage in direction. Miss Withers was erratic, both pulling and slicing. Her approach chip shots were also without finish, but her putting was excellent. She sank several putts of 15 feet. Other Contests In a bogey handicap Mrs Guy Williams went round in 78 —a record for the course. Mrs E. G. Kerr (Timaru) won the long driving contest with a drive of 197 yards 2 feet.
